Now that the Stearman is back in the air I have had time to look at what is going on in the world beyond my hangar.
Today I looked at the ICAS list of 393 performers. The newer talent seems to be bringing back a trickle of rural events, which is encouraging. Events like French Lick Indiana are the kind of towns that became creative with airshows in the 1970's when Sandi Pierce and I were working that area.
One person like myself cannot inspire a move to bring back rural shows but 393 clicks worth of performers out there working the back yard can make it happen.

Don't underestimate the power of the internet to find information about small shows. I found the information with my search engine...
 "FRENCH LICK AIRSHOW"

(my letter writing is a little rough but I can change a 450 P&W cylinder or repair a Stearman brake in less time than most pilots)

Just don't google "Wings Of Victory airshow" , because our webmaster is a bit slow in keeping it updated. Seriously, though...our little show is coming along again this year. Like most small shows, we are battling the budget, but we feel our show will be enjoyable for all who attend. We like to keep it up-close-and-personal!!
If you're in the great state of Ohio during the weekend of August 18-19, why not give us a try. We are right off route 33, aproximately 20 miles southeast of Columbus.
So far we have to offer:

A-10 West demo team with P-51 Heritage Flight
B-2 fly-over (Saturday only, but that's what they said about the B-1 last year lol)
Greg Aldridge  flying farmer act
Billy Werth in his Pitts S2
Commemorative Air Force B-24
Otto The Helicopter

plus warbirds (of course), additional military fly-bys, airplane rides, re-enactors, and much more.

Thanks Jenny. It is a shame they don't much info. How could I even consider driving 4 hours if I don't know what they are going to have.

I went to the Chesterfield show a few years ago, it is small, but they had a good turnout.  Only 3-4 hours of flying, but they don't try to stretch it out just to make a longer show.

In addition to Walt I believe that Patty Wagstaff will be flying, and Rob Reider is narrating.  Should be a good show!

Come see Jenny wave from the wingtip this weekend at Vidalia GA. It is our first rural event of the season.
Ol' Smokey is really SMOKIN' this year with the new system.

Jenny also is premiering her new stunt from the wires. Only the second wing walker to perform it.

While I am still here at Vidalia GA on a Monday, waiting out a weather front...I want to tell what a huge success story the Vidalia event has been through the years.
It began in the early 90s. The first event included Charlie Kulp and Clancy Speal as well as the French Connection, who had been pushing for the event since 3 years prior.
The airport manager Kevin Britton got the show off to a start and then it grew fast enough that it became obvious the local Chamber and the Onion Festival must get involved to recruit enough volunteers.
The REAL success of the event is the teamwork of the festival, the town and it's partnership with the airport to make the festival a top notch event. It has generated the enthusiasm and spirit to bring a jet team to town FOUR times through recent years.
Not many rural towns can say that. I would like to see more stories like the one Vidalia can tell with pride.

Florence SC MAY FLY
This event has been one of my regulars for twenty years or more. It has had it's ups and downs and has survived many growing pains. Cordy Williamson is the spark plug that keeps everyone looking skyward each year.
This year I taxiied up to a NEW restored hangar from the days when the airport served the military. It stands near the new terminal and is easily mistaken for being ALL brand new.
The annual event this year was headquartered at the NEW hangar and made the weekend a delight to have performers and volunteers all in the same place to stage work, play and meet and greet near the performing airplanes.
Florence is a CAN DO town with many dedicated people who love aviation and like the townspeople to come take a look at rural pride in action.

Certainly a showcase to be proud of.

Martinsburg WV,
They still consider themselves a rural airshow despite the bigger statics on display. I enjoyed the opportunity to park near  the crowd where the kids could see the ladies get off the wings after our performance.

We parked on the grass and walked over to the smiling people who were waving programs with pen in hand. I want to thank the entire staff for all the hard work that turned the event into a huge success.

Daniel Field, Augusta Georgia
This weekend I will enjoy doing a return performance at Daniel Field. My friend, the legendary pioneer Bevo Howard learned to fly there in 1930. He and a buddy would walk through the woods to take flying lessons when he was 16.

My favorite story about flying with Bevo was the day we were en route to Andrews NC (I thought).
After we had cruised along together from Walterboro, he suddenly pulled alongside in his Jungmeister and waved good by as he peeled off and took the fork in the railroad at Thomson, flying to the southwest away from me.

I found out the next day he had another show at Macon GA enroute that he didn't tell me about. He was very sly, and a very good friend.

My wingwalkers and I are looking forward to this weekend.

STUART FLORIDA

We are there with our Double Trouble team. Stuart is a pretty town on the Atlantic coast  with lots of aviation history.
We have added a few new twists to the double wingwalker format. We have had two upgrades already this year.
As I remember, we park close enough to the spectator line to walk over and visit between flights and prepping for them

PUNTA GORDA FLORIDA
Again we start our season with a good ol' rural style event. The kind where we can get face to face on the flightline with people we like to visit with and mix with at receptions.
Bob Hall is again the airboss and sure makes it easy when we are working with pros.
The date is March 21-22 and we hope to see you there. anyone who likes to talk about the enjoyment and ideas to make the rural events more fun and more sucessful, please
don't hesitate to give me a call.

I hope EVERYONE has a good airshow season in 2009.
